Regional Express (Rex) will start services from Australia’s newest airport, Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport on January 1, 2015.
The inaugural flight will arrive from Brisbane at 9:45am on Thursday, before continuing to Mount Isa along the Western 2 route.
This route is one of five regulated routes awarded to Rex by the Queensland State Government in October. Rex was awarded all routes that it applied for in a competitive tender process, including the Northern 1 and 2 Routes currently held by the airline.
The five regulated routes are:
Western 1 Route from Brisbane to Toowoomba (Brisbane West Wellcamp) to St George to Cunnamulla to Thargomindah and return; and
Western 2 Route from Brisbane to Toowoomba (Brisbane West Wellcamp) to Charleville to Quilpie to Windorah to Birdsville to Bedourie to Boulia to Mount Isa and return; and
Gulf Route from Cairns to Normanton to Mornington Island to Burketown to Doomadgee to Mount Isa and return; and
Northern 1 Route from Townsville to Winton to Longreach and return; and
Northern 2 Route from Townsville to Hughenden to Richmond to Julia Creek to Mount Isa and return.
“The Rex team has worked tirelessly over the past 10 weeks to ensure that the new regulated air services to 16 new Queensland airports can commence on 1 January 2015,” said Rex general manager Network Strategy & Sales Mr Warrick Lodge.
“Rex is pleased to be operating two services through the new Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, connecting regional Queensland with Toowoomba and Brisbane.
“Rex is honoured to be selected by the Queensland Government to deliver these essential services that provide critical linkages between Brisbane, Cairns and Townsville to 20 regional communities that span the entire state. Rex has delivered a very reliable and safe service with heartfelt country hospitality on the Northern 1 and 2 Routes during the past four years and we look forward to reproducing our outstanding service levels on the new regulated routes from 1 January 2015,” he said.
Brisbane West Wellcamp general manager Mr Phil Gregory said the airport was delighted to welcome Rex.
“We have been pleased with the support the local community has given the airport and it’s vital this support continues so we can provide additional routes as we gain momentum.
“The airport is an important piece of infrastructure for the community, which will have far reaching economic and social benefits for Toowoomba and beyond,” said Mr Gregory.
