EVENTS SET TO SOAR WITH NEW AIRPORT

21 May 2014

Airport developer and local businessman, John Wagner, has called on local tourism operators and businesses to expect more national events, like the FKG Tour of Toowoomba National Road Series Event, coming to the region.

“With the new BrisbaneWestWellcampAirport opening later this year, we have an enormous opportunity on our doorstep to attract more headline tourism and sporting events to our region,” Mr Wagner said.

“Our region already hosts dozens of major national events every year and it’s quite likely we’ll see this more than double with improved air access and new facilities such as the proposed convention centre coming on line.”

Olympic cycling gold medalist Scott McGrory, OAM, said BrisbaneWestWellcampAirport would have a huge impact on race competitors.

“Teams will be able to fly in and fly out of the airport, which will not only save time but increase performance,” said Mr McGrory, who is part of the SBS team following this year’s FKG ‘Tour of Toowoomba’.

Routes directly into and out of Sydney would be fantastic and a true ‘value-add’ to both the Tour itself, and the National Road Series overall, he said.

Mr Wagner said that while airport management was still in negotiation with airlines, he expected Sydney would be one of the first major routes for the airport.

“This means we can start pitching for events that will attract interstate and potentially international interest.

“It also opens doors for our local sporting greats - like our airport ambassadors Laura Geitz and Shane Webcke - who will no longer have to travel to Brisbane to fly to their sporting matches and professional engagements,” he said.

BrisbaneWestWellcampAirport is sponsoring stage four of the Tour of Toowoomba National Road Series Event (May 22 – 25).

Stage four will start on Saturday (May 24) from Clifton-Leyburn Rd, Clifton and finish at the Glenvale Criterium Circuit in Harvey Road Glenvale at 2.30pm.

The jet-capable airport is still under construction and is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
