Community Open Day Announced For Australia's Newest Airport
30 July 2014
EVENT: Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport Community Open Day
DATE: Sunday 28 September 2014
TIME: 9.30am to 4pm
In a landmark event, the gates to Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (BWWAirport) will be thrown open to the public on Sunday 28 September from 9.30am to 4pm in a special Community Open Day celebration to showcase Australia’s newest airport.
BWW Airport General Manager Phil Gregory said the open day would be the only chance for the general public to see all areas of the airport before it goes operational later this year.
“We’re inviting everyone to be part of Australian aviation history as we unveil the first public airport built in Australia in 50 years,” Mr Gregory said.
“Most of the construction will be complete by then so guests will be able to tour the terminal and the massive 2.87kilometre runway including access to areas that will be restricted when the airport opens in November.
“There’ll be lots of entertainment for the whole family including aerial shows, aircraft displays and live performances by local bands.”
Mr Gregory said more than 18,000 people attended the airport’s ‘Under Construction’ open day event in November 2013 and airport management was expecting even more people this year.
The full open day program will be released closer to the date.
When operational, BWW Airport will be the first major airport to cater for regular public jet services to the Toowoomba and Surat Basin region. Potential routes include Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Cairns, Mackay, Emerald, Roma and Miles.
Developed by an Australian family-owned company, Wagners, the airport will also be a major freight gateway for local agricultural producers and manufacturers.
With no government funding, BWWAirport is the first privately-funded public airport built in Australia.
