Bwwairport To Be New Hub For Regional Queensland
15 October 2014
New services are set to further cement Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport (BWWA) as the gateway to regional Queensland following the announcement Regional Express (REX) would service the airport from January 1 2015.
The airline will operate four services a week across two routes:
Western Route 1: Brisbane to Toowoomba (Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport) to St George to Cunnamulla to Thargomindah and return; and
Western Route 2: Brisbane to Toowoomba (Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport) to Charleville to Quilpie to Windorah to Birdsville to Bedourie to Boulia to Mount Isa and return
QantasLink will also start double daily return services between BWWAirport and Sydney from 17 November this year.
“We’re really excited to welcome our second customer on board,” said BWWAirport General Manager Phil Gregory.
“As Australia’s largest regional airline, Rex is a great fit for us with their connectivity throughout Queensland and New South Wales.
“The new routes are good news for business travellers and the FIFO market now that we will have connections from both Brisbane and Sydney and onto regional Queensland.
“We are continuing to work with all the airlines and hope they can develop routes that will compliment these new services,” Mr Gregory said.
Rex General Manager Networks Strategy and Sales Mr Warrick Lodge said outback Queensland was the heart land of Australian aviation and Rex was honoured to be selected to provide these essential services.
Mayor Paul Antonio said the flights, by being operated from the Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport, will provide important connectivity from western Queensland into Toowoomba and on to Sydney and beyond.
“The Wellcamp Airport is a game changer for our region and to see another airline come on board is great news for our community,” Mayor Antonio said.
“These services, coupled with Toowoomba’s remarkable liveability, make us well positioned to attract fly-in, fly-out workers to live in the region.
“I also want to acknowledge Skytrans, for the faith they have had in our region, in operating these services previously.”
Australia’s newest public airport, BWWAirport is the first privately-funded public airport built in Australia and the first public airport to open since Tullamarine almost 50 years ago.
Latest independent economic studies estimate that by 2019, the airport will generate nearly half a billion dollars worth of business per annum in the local Toowoomba economy.
