AUSTRALIA’S FIRST EVER REGULAR PASSENGER TRANSPORT JET SERVICE BETWEEN TOOWOOMBA AND MELBOURNE

15 March 2016

Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport and Australia’s premier regional airline Airnorth celebrated a major aviation milestone this week with the start of regular direct jet passenger services between Toowoomba and Melbourne and Toowoomba and Cairns. Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport developer Mr John Wagner said, on behalf of his family, they were extremely proud and excited to celebrate another major aviation milestone for the region.

“Firstly it was direct flights to Sydney and now to have Melbourne and Cairns services starting, it’s definitely furthering much-needed connectivity for both business and leisure travel,” said Mr Wagner, himself a pilot. Airnorth CEO Daniel Bowden said as a regional market leader and Australia’s second longest-serving airline, they were constantly in touch with new ways to extend and improve services for customers.

“Efficient air travel will attract people to Toowoomba, one of the most dynamic growth areas in the country, and give the region easy access to its growing international markets. All of our passengers travel in style. Our partnership with Wellcamp means they have superb facilities on the ground and our codeshare arrangements with Qantas offer a range of benefits such as online bookings, frequent flyer rewards and other services.”

The new service includes seven weekly return flights from Toowoomba to Melbourne and three weekly return flights from Toowoomba to Cairns on Airnorth’s state-of-the-art jet fleet. Travellers can book flights on the seven return Melbourne services and three direct return Cairns services via www.airnorth.com.au or  www.qantas.com or through local travel agents.

Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport welcomed its first flight on November 17 and its 2.87km runway is one of Australia’s longest regional runways and the second longest regional runway in Queensland. The airport is the most recent public port to open in Australia since Tullamarine was built almost 50 years ago.
