MAY: Port Douglas Carnivale
Showcasing the best that Tropical North Queensland has to offer, Port Douglas Carnivale is held annually in May and has been running for more than 20 years. Originally celebrating the official start of the sugar cane harvesting season, Port Douglas Carnival features fresh local produce, world class wines and an exciting line up of local talent including musicians, artists, performers, celebrity chefs, cabaret, comedy, burlesque and the physical circus of the famous Spiegeltent. Signalling the start of the tourism season, the family-friendly event attracts visitors from all over Australia and the world and offers a variety of free and paid events.
JUNE: Cairns Airport Adventure Festival
Set in the stunning surrounds of Cairns, gateway to the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival is an exciting athletic event that takes place annually in June. Showcasing a variety of action-packed events, the festival features a number of sporting events for all skill levels. Events include the Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge, Cairns Post Bright Night Run, RRR Mountain Bike Challenge, Quicksilver Reef Swim – Green Island, IRONKIDS Cairns, and the pinnacle of the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival – IRONMAN 70.3 Cairns. The IRONMAN Asia-Pacific Championship is a gruelling full-distance triathlon featuring a 3.8km swim, 180km bike leg and 42.2km run.
JULY: Cairns Show
The largest regional show in Australia outside of Brisbane’s Royal Queensland Show (EKKA), the Cairns Show is held annually in July and offers three days of family-friendly entertainment for all ages. Held at the Cairns Showgrounds just minutes from the city centre, the Cairns Show was first held in 1891 and continues to delight locals and visitors with community business displays, historical displays, farm and produce exhibits, wood chopping competitions, performing artists, carnival rides and showbags. For an unforgettable day of thrills and entertainment, you can’t miss the Cairns Show when it rolls into town.
JULY: Townsville 400
Over a three day weekend every July, the streets of Townsville are overtaken by the sound of V8 engines and the smell of high octane fuel. The whole city roars to life with the Townsville 400, offering a huge weekend of rock n roll and intense car racing. With critical championship points on offer, competition is fierce and punters are treated to an exciting weekend of live music, the Dunlop Series, Sports GTs, Stadium Super Trucks, V8 Utes Series and the main event – the V8 Supercars. There’s something for everyone on and off the track, with family-friendly entertainment trackside.
AUGUST: Cairns Festival
Celebrating the rich colour and culture of Cairns for more than 50 years, Cairns Festival is held annually in August. Surrounded by stunning natural beauty, the festival celebrates the colourful local community and its rich cultural heritage. The events program features the Grand Parade, Carnival on Collins, Sunday on the Esplanade and a famous fireworks display. The family-friendly event is free of charge and includes performances by the Soweto Gospel Choir in the recently opened Munro Martin Parklands.
