Domestic freight: Wellcamp fast tracks local delivery
28 April 2017
The first domestic freighter operation took off from Wellcamp Airport earlier this month. 10 tonnes of urgently needed track chains and rollers were loaded into a chartered domestic freighter bound for Rio Tinto’s bauxite mine at Weipa.
Local civil construction, quarrying and mining industry company Trackspares worked through the night to pull together an urgent order to rectify a time-critical breakdown situation at the Rio Tinto mine.
EastAir, who conducts urgent air transport for Rio Tinto arranged a BAE 146-200QT ‘Whisper Jet’ through charter company Pionair Australia to get the urgent goods to Weipa.
Sara Hales, Wellcamp Airport General Manager, says the airport’s cargo and passenger capabilities ensure local businesses have improved connectivity and the opportunity to meet urgent client deadlines using local infrastructure.
“Toowoomba and the surrounding regions provide services and supply materials for major national and international companies and for many of these entities the advantage of having an airport nearby streamlines logistical operations,” said Hales.
The Whipser Jet used in the charter can carry up to 11.5 tonnes of cargo and has a large cargo door, making it the perfect size to assist with the job.
Wellcamp Airport looks forward to continuing to explore and expand domestic freight possibilities. There is scope for Wellcamp Airport to act as a freight hub, with freight being shipped to the precinct in order to take advantage of the international connectivity afforded by Cathay Pacific Airway’s scheduled 747-8 freighter service currently taking place on Tuesday evenings.
